Mary Lambert On Same Love, Madonna, And Queen Latifah
Mary Lambert shares her inspiration for writing the chorus for the hit song, Same Love.
As well, she discusses becoming friends with Madonna and meeting Queen Latifah.
Mary Lambert is still reeling from the huge success of last week’s performance of Same Love at the Grammys. She performed with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with a special appearance by Madonna. The performance included 33 couples getting married in a ceremony officiated by Queen Latifah.
Lambert shared the inspiration for her addictive chorus in Same Love,
“I love love. I think straight people love love, too. I don’t think they realize that they love any kind of love.”
The success of the chorus spawned her own song, She Keeps Me Warm. She explains why she wrote it,
“I wrote the chorus specifically for “Same Love” and I kept getting asked to perform it at shows. But I’m not going to rap, I’m just not going to do it. I’m not going to perform to a track. Rather than do that I crafted a song around it.”
During that special performance at the Grammys, she sang with Madonna. Lambert shared that she now considers Madonna a friend,
“We had two days of rehearsals together. I consider her a friend now. I was very emotional, not just from the song but from the fact that people were getting married during the song and Madonna was singing my lyrics. There was a moment when I was crying and she wiped my tears away.”
Finally, she offered her thoughts on Queen Latifah officiating the wedding of 33 couples during the song’s performance.
“She was beautiful and has such a glow about her and has such a beautiful energy.”
