Kate And William Take Legal Action Over Topless Photos
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s legal team has filed charges against Closer.
Closer is the French magazine that was the first to publish photographs of the couple outside a secluded villa in Provence, including shots of Kate sunbathing topless.
Kate Middleton and Prince William have filed a criminal complaint in France against Closer, the magazine that published the pictures of Kate, the BBC reports. They had already filed a civil lawsuit.
Experts say the criminal case should be open-and-shut in favor of the royals, based on France’s strict privacy laws. If an injunction is granted, the magazine would be taken off French shelves immediately. Tens of thousands of euros in damages could be assessed, and the magazine’s editor and photographer could even end up in jail.
While no British outlet has published the photos, on Saturday images appeared in the Irish Daily Star. In addition, on Monday, Chi, a glossy Italian gossip magazine owned by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Mondadori group (which also publishes Closer in France), published a 26-page photo spread of the couple, including the topless shots.
As the controversy continues, the royal couple have been in the Solomon Islands representing the Queen on their nine-day Diamond Jubilee tour of South East Asia and the South Pacific.
