Google Maps has begun documenting the ocean for it’s ‘street view’ feature.

This ocean collection includes six of the world’s most incredible underwater spots, including coral reefs (and their inhabitants) in Australia, the Philippines and Hawaii.

Type the phrase in Google, and the screen will tumble around! The same thing happens if you search for “Z or R twice.”

Here’s something interesting. Stop whatever you are doing and and go to the Google homepage.

Type in the words “Do a barrel roll” into the search box and Google will surprise you!

Your Google search engine results page will itself do “a barrel roll” before presenting you with the results.

Because it was built in HTML5, it doesn’t work on all browsers. Firefox and Chrome seem to support it best. If it doesn’t work for you, here’s how it goes…

The Background – A Google Easter Egg

‘Do A Barrell Roll’ references the classic 1997 Nintendo game ‘Star Fox 64′.

Peppy, the game’s veteran space pilot rabbit, tells hero Fox McCloud to “do a barrel roll” (a feat accomplished by pressing “Z” or “R” twice) multiple times throughout the game.

In a true display of quirky nerdiness, the lovely people at google have created a new Easter Egg honouring the barrel roll!

A Google spokesperson has told Mashable…

“Today’s fun query, ‘do a barrel roll’, was created by a Google software engineer with the primary goal of entertaining users — while showcasing the power of CSS3, a presentation feature of modern browsers. The ‘do a barrel roll’ query, which causes the search page to spin, will remain in place for a while.”
