John Butler Trio are “seeking advice” over an apparent copyright breach during a commercial at this year’s Super Bowl.

The advertisement for Dannon’s Oikos Greek yoghurt (above), appears to have used a riff from the bands 2003 hit song ‘Zebra’ (below).

A potential copyright breach has been discovered by The John Butler Trio fans who noticed the famous riff from the band’s 2003 song ‘Zebra’ was being used in an ad for a Greek yoghurt, which ran during this years Super Bowl.

Dannon’s Oikos Greek Yoghurt advert showed a man and a woman competing over a tub of yoghurt. Throughout the commercial, which was watched by an estimated audience of 111 million, a song played which bore a striking resemblance to the melody of John Butler Trio’s ‘Zebra’.

John Butler Trio, an Australian folk rock band, issued a brief statement saying it was looking into the issue…

“Thank you everyone for making us aware of the Oikos Greek yogurt TV ad that aired during the Super Bowl featuring a song that sounds extremely similar to Zebra, John Butler and his management were not aware of this usage until yesterday, and we will be seeking advice as how to address the issue.”
