Deep Purple Co-Founder Jon Lord Dies, Aged 71
Jon Lord, keyboardist and co-founder of Deep Purple has died at 71.
The Hammond organ specialist co-wrote ‘Smoke on the Water’ and many other rock classics.
Jon Lord, whose keyboard riffs and solos helped define the pioneering sound of Deep Purple, has lost his battle to pancreatic cancer after suffering a pulmonary embolism at The London Clinic. He was 71.
Lord co-wrote some of Deep Purple’s most famous songs, including ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Highway Star’, ‘Woman From Tokyo’ and later had a successful solo career following his retirement from the band in 2002.
A statement posted on Lord’s website said he died “surrounded by his loving family” and adds that “Jon passed from Darkness to Light”
