Who were the winners and losers at the box office at the weekend?
‘Green Lantern’ has topped the Aussie box office in its opening weekend, ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ has held on to the top spot in the US box office, with the new Glee movie not even making the top ten!
US
‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ has held off competition to stay at the top of the US box office.
The movie adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s bestseller The Help, starring Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard, opened in second place with $25.5m.
And then there was Glee. The TV show’s 3-D concert movie not only failed to meet modest expectations… it failed to crack the box-office weekend’s Top 10! The Glee movie finished in 11th place with a $5.7 million Friday-Sunday gross, per estimates.
Australia
‘Green Lantern’ has topped the Australian box office in its opening weekend.
The DC Comics adaptation, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, earned just over $3 million, knocking ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ into second position.
UK
‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ has ended Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2′s month-long reign at the top of the UK box office.
The prequel, starring James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto, earned £5.8 million, beating new release ‘The Smurfs’ and ‘Deathly Hallows: Part 2′ and securing the number one spot.
