Former Footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger comes out as gay in German newspaper.
Hitzlsperger states that he’s never been ashamed to be gay.
Former footballer for Aston Villa, West Ham and Everton, Thomas Hitzlsperger comes out as gay. He made the announcement via German newspaper, Die Zeit.
In the article, Hitzlsperger stated his reasons for coming out,
“I’m coming out about my homosexuality because I want to move the discussion about homosexuality among professional sportspeople forwards.”
He stated also that, “I’ve never been ashamed of the way I am.”
Prime Minister David Cameron posted on his Facebook page,
As an Aston Villa fan, I’ve always admired what Thomas Hitzlsperger did on the pitch – but I admire him even more today. A brave & important move.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg took to Twitter to share his support,
