Irish Government Minister Leo Varadkar: ‘I Am A Gay Man’

Irish Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has come out publicly saying he is a “gay man”.

Speaking on Irish national radio station RTE, Varadkar said that “it’s not something that defines me”.

Irish Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has announced that he is gay during a national radio interview on Sunday morning.

“I am a gay man, it’s not a secret, but not something that everyone would necessarily know but isn’t something I’ve spoken publicly about before,”

The minister was speaking to Miriam O’Callaghan on RTÉ Radio One. You can listen to the full interview here.

“It’s not something that defines me, I’m not a half-Indian politician, or a doctor politician or a gay politician for that matter. It’s just part of who I am, it doesn’t define me, it is part of my character I suppose”.

Mr. Varadkar said his decision to speak publicly about it now was because he felt comfortable to talk about it and also for political and policy reasons.

The minister said he did not want people to think he had a hidden agenda in relation to some forthcoming legislation and also the forthcoming Irish referendum on same-sex marriage.

The minister has been receiving lots of support since giving the interview…

Leo Varadkar, who was first elected to office in 2007 also celebrates his 36th birthday today. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate!
