In the lead up to the 2014 Oscars, rukkle takes a look back at the actors that have been nominated for gay, lesbian, and transgender roles.

The list of nominated actors includes Annette Bening, Heath Ledger, Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Cher.

The 2014 Oscars promises to be the gayest one’s yet. The host is Ellen Degeneres and the producers are Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. With all this in mind, rukkle decided to take a look back to see if acting gay is rewarded at the Oscars. Here’s our list of actors nominated for gay roles.

 

Peter Finch – Nominated for Best Actor in Sunday Bloody Sunday

The very first actor nominated for their portrayal of a gay role is Peter Finch. Finch played Dr. Daniel Hirsh in the 1971 film, Sunday Bloody Sunday. The film tells the story of Dr. Hirsh and a woman, Alex Greville (played by Glenda Jackson) who are both involved with a sculptor Bob Elkin (played by Murray Head).

James Coco – Nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Only When I Laugh

James Coco was surprisingly nominated for both the Oscar and the Golden Raspberry for the 1981 film, Only When I Laugh. Coco played Jimmy Perrino, a gay actor that is miserable that he can’t find any more acting roles.

Cher – Nominated for Best Supported Actress in Silkwood

Cher in Silkwood

Cher received her first Oscar nomination in the 1983 film, Silkwood. Cher played Meryl Streep’s lesbian roommate in the film based on a true story. Silkwood followed Streep’s character of a nuclear-reactor worker who questions the safety of her and her co-workers.

Bruce Davison – Nominated for Best Actor in Longtime Companion

Bruce Davison was nominated for the 1989 film, Longtime Companion. The film was the first to receive a wide release that dealt with AIDS. Davison plays a New Yorker who’s partner succumbs to the disease.

Jaye Davidson – Nominated for Best Supporting Actor in The Crying Game

In 1992, the British psychological thriller, The Crying Game, was released. The film included the nominated performance of Jaye Davidson for his portrayal of a transgender woman who falls in love with an IRA member involved in the death of her boyfriend.

Javier Bardem – Nominated for Best Actor in Before Night Falls

Javier Bardem was nominated for his role in the 2000 film, Before Night Falls. In the film, Bardem plays gay Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. He later received the Oscar for his role in No Country for Old Men.

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal – Nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor in Brokeback Mountain

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain

Brokeback Mountain was released in 2005 and has become this generation’s iconic gay love story told on film. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal portrayed Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranchers that met a tragic ending.

Felicity Huffman – Nominated for Best Actress in Transamerica

Felicity Huffman in Transamerica

Transamerica was released in 2005 and features to date one of the best portrayals of a transgender woman on film. In the film, Felicity Huffman plays Bree, a nerdy transgender woman that is forced to meet the son that she fathered many years ago. The film was also nominated for Best Song sung by gay icon, Dolly Parton.

Colin Firth – Nominated for Best Actor in A Single Man

Actors Nominated For Gay Roles, Colin Firth

Colin Firth played George Falconer in the 2009 drama based on the novel of the same name, A Single Man. Firth’s character was a depressed gay British professor living in the USA in 1962.

Annette Bening and Julianne Moore – Nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in The Kids Are All Right

The Kids Are All Right was a Sundance hit that was released to critical acclaim in 2010. At the heart of the film is the realistic lesbian relationship portrayed by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore. The film did earn Bening a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.

Rooney Mara – Nominated for Best Actress in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Actors Nominated For Gay Roles, Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara was nominated for playing the bisexual hacker, Lisbeth Salander. Mara’s character assists Daniel Craig’s in the 40 year old mystery of a woman’s disappearance.

Jared Leto – Nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the Dallas Buyer’s Club

Actors Nominated For Gay Roles, Jared Leto

He’s won many awards so far (including a Golden Globe), but for now, Jared Leto is only nominated in this year’s 2014 Oscars. In the Dallas Buyer’s Club, he plays a transgender woman who has AIDS.
