A new gay marriage poll released this week from Ipsos on behalf of Reuters shows a majority support for marriage equality in developed nations.

The poll finds most adults in developed countries favor gay marriage or some type of legal recognition for same-sex couples and think they should be able to adopt children.

Of the 12,484 adults questioned in the survey, 52 percent of people favour full marriage equality for gays and 21 percent support legal recognition but not marriage.

Sweden, Norway, Spain, Belgium, Canada and France – all countries where same-sex marriage is legal – showed majority support for full equality for same sex couples, as did most Germans, Britons and Australians.

In Argentina, which also recognises gay marriage, only 48 percent of people favoured marriage equality for gay couples. The numbers were similar in the United States, where legal recognition of gay couples varies by state, with 42 percent supporting marriage for gays and 23 percent favoring legal recognition.

“What we see is that in every one of the 16 countries we surveyed, there is a majority in favour of allowing same sex couples to have some sort of legal recognition,” observed Nicolas Boson, a senior vice president at Ipsos. “In nine out of 16 countries we see an outright majority in favour of full marriage equality.”

Opposition to legal recognition or marriage of gays was highest in Hungary, South Korea, Poland and Japan, where 37 percent of people said they were unsure about how they felt.

Social media and religion also had an impact on attitudes about gay marriage. People who are active on social media were more likely to support same-sex couples than those who were not online as much, according to the gay marriage poll.

A new survey has found that several technology and entertainment companies are among the brands most popular among the LGBT community.

According to the research, YouTube is the most well received brand with Netflix and Amazon.com following closely behind.

The YouGov BrandIndex has named YouTube as the best-perceived brand by the LGBT community, followed by Netflix and Amazon in second and third place, respectively.

Among those to drop out of the top 20 gay brands this year are Disneyland/Walt Disney World, Apple, Comedy Central and Starbucks.

YouGov researchers reportedly asked respondents, “If you’ve heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?” Results were then filtered for respondents who identified LGBT.

British comedian and actor John Oliver took over as summer host for ‘The Daily Show’ last week.

Given the rapidly evolving status of gay rights in the U.S, where the Boy Scouts of America recently lifted a ban on gay youths, Oliver decided it was time to check up on the issue around the globe.

Settling into his stint guest-hosting ‘The Daily Show’, John Oliver offered rapid-fire digs at opponents to LGBT equality last week during a segment called ‘Gaywatch – The International Edition’.

Oliver first tackled the Boy Scouts allowing gay scouts but not gay leaders, meaning that it’s okay to be in the scouts when you have gay urges “up until the age where they can act on them.” He also mocked  former Southern Baptist minister Pat Robertson for declaring that gay people want to “do sex” with each other, while sharing his sympathies with an unsatisfied Mrs. Robertson.

Operating from the assumption that Europeans are “more enlightened about these issues” than Americans, Oliver was surprised to learn of the riots that erupted in Paris following the legalisation in that famously sexually laissez-faire country.

“I guess they just feel very strongly about preserving traditional marriage in France,” he reasoned, “which is of course one man, one woman, and her sister, once, and their maid, and the college-age daughter of friends who stayed with them for the summer. You know, traditional French marriage.”

Whether or not that’s true, Oliver was sure of one thing. “No matter what country you live in, what religion you belong to, it seems crazy that in this day and age anyone has a problem with which gender” you are attracted to, though he allowed Pat Robertson to have the final word.

 French Olympic swimmers Florent Manaudou and Frédérick Bousquet have joined a new anti-homophobia campaign.

 Manaudou, a gold medalist for France in London 2012 and freestyle world record holder Frédérick Bousquet have posed as an “imaginary couple” in the photo campaign by Olivier Ciappa.

A photo of French Olympic swimmers Florent Manaudou and Frédérick Bousquet, which has gone viral online, is part of an Olivier Ciappa project called ‘imaginary couples’.

The pictures feature the caption “A peaceful look on homosexuality” and portray the “couples” asleep in each other’s arms or in intimate and happy situations.

Bousquet is actually partnered with Manaudou’s sister, Laure, and they have a daughter together so she shouldn’t mind too much — it’s a family affair!

Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria and Belgian-Italian singer Lara Fabian have also posed as a “couple” for the campaign.

During an interview with Howard Sattler on Perth radio station 6PR, Julia Gillard answered a series of questions about her gender war with Tony Abbott, her atheism and her personal relationships.

Towards the end of the 20-minute interview, the Prime Minister appeared shocked when Sattler offered her the chance to dispel “myths, rumours, snide jokes and innuendo” about her and went on to question the sexuality of her partner Tim Mathieson, a divorcee with three adult children.

“That’s absurd,” she says to Sattler, who then prompts her further saying “But you hear it, ‘he must be gay, he’s a hairdresser’”, to which she responded…

“You know, to all the hairdressers out there, including the men who are listening, I don’t think in life one can actually look at a whole profession full of different human beings and say ‘Gee we know something about every one of those human beings’, I mean, it’s absurd isn’t it?”

Jane Lynch has announced that she and her wife Lara Embry are to divorce.

The Glee star married psychologist Lara Embry in Massachusetts in June 2010 after the pair met at a fundraiser the previous year.

Glee star Jane Lynch has revealed that she and her wife Lara Embry have made the “difficult decision” to part ways. In a statement to People, she said:

“Lara and I have decided to end our marriage. This has been a difficult decision for us as we care very deeply about one another. We ask for privacy as we deal with this family matter,”

Shortly after the couple’s wedding, Lynch said that marrying Embry changed her life and that she relished her role as step-mother to Embry’s daughter Haden.

“I shouldn’t say this, but I’d never dated anyone that I wanted to marry. I didn’t think it was going to be out there for me,

But the minute we were married, I felt the difference. I felt like I am no longer alone. I got married – and I married a doctor!”

Gay British Lance Corporal James Wharton said his fellow soldier, Prince Harry, came to his defense when six other soldiers verbally harassed him and threatened to beat him.

An account of the incident which took place in 2008, has been published in Wharton’s new book ‘Out in the Army‘. He writes that Harry prevents a homophobic attack by soldiers from another regiment who said they were going to “batter” him.

Harry, a tank commander at the time, was approached by Wharton who was tearful, and told him that he thought he was going to be “murdered by the infantry”. He writes…

“I told him [Prince Harry], ‘I think I’m going to be murdered by the infantry.’ I climbed into the turret and talked Harry through exactly what had happened. He had a complete look of bewilderment on his face.

“I couldn’t stop the tears from welling up in my eyes. He said, ‘Right I’m going to sort this shit out once and for all.’”

He goes on to say that Harry approached the group without hesitation, and that upon his return he said the situation was “sorted”.

“I will always be grateful to Harry,” Wharton continued. “I will never forget what happened. Until he went over and dealt with everything I was on track for a battering.”

Wharton’s new book, Out In The Army, chronicles his life in the military, as well as details of his camaraderie with Prince Harry.

Children brought up by gay couples are healthier and get along better with their families, according to a new study.

The world’s largest study of its kind, which examined the wellbeing of 500 children in Australia, found that children of same-sex couples scored higher for overall health and family cohesion, so overwhelmingly in fact, that researchers said it would only occur by chance less than 1 in 10,000 times.

Researchers still don’t know why children fare better with same-sex parents, but the lead author on the Melbourne University study, Dr Simon Crouch, offered his opinion on the findings.

“Because of the situation that same-sex families find themselves in, they are generally more willing to communicate and approach the issues that any child may face at school, like teasing or bullying,”

“This fosters openness and means children tend to be more resilient. That would be our hypothesis.”

The research directly contradicts ‘evidence’ offered by political and religious leaders around the world, who have all opposed gay marriage on the basis it would be harmful for children.

The findings of the latest study is supported by long-term research published in 2010, which showed that children raised by lesbian parents develop into psychologically healthy teens and have fewer behavioural problems. At the time researcher Nanette Gartrell at the University of California said:

”Contrary to assertions from people opposed to same-sex parenting, we found that the 17-year-olds scored higher in psychological adjustment in areas of competency and lower in problem behaviors than the normative age-matched sample of kids raised in traditional families with a mom and a dad,”

The creator of NBC’s Community is in talks with Sony Pictures Television to return in some capacity for the series’ upcoming fifth season.

News that Community creator Dan Harmon may be making a return to the series for its upcoming fifth season was this week confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Details on just what role the former showrunner would have remain unclear.

For those of you who haven’t watched the first three seasons of Dan Harmon’s comedy series Community, please do so right now. I’ll wait… Finished?

Amazing isn’t it? Highly original, loveable characters, surreal, sweet without being overly sentimental, full of daring, politically incorrect humour which is never done for shock value or just for the sake of it, look I could write a thesis all about just how good the first three seasons of Community are.

Now please do me another favour. Go watch the fourth series. It wont take you as long as there’s only 13 episodes as opposed to the others which had 25, 24 and 22 respectively… You all done? Good. Notice anything different apart from the length?

Okay so the fourth and latest season looks the same; same setting, same wonderful cast but something’s not right. It’s hard to put your finger on it. There’s a certain spark, a certain quality that made season 1, 2 and 3 unique, brilliant and dare I say genius, which is clearly missing from the fourth. For want of a better analogy it’s like when someone makes you a cup of tea without paying any real attention as to how you take it. Technically it’s still tea so you drink it down but it’s not the kind of tea you’re used to, the kind of tea you love. Actually what am I talking about, that analogy is perfect.

So what is the reason for this dip in quality? Well, the clue is in the first sentence; “the first three seasons of DAN HARMON’S comedy series Community.” Dan Harmon is the man who created the show. The premise of a mismatched study group was based on his own experiences in Glendale Community College and the character of Jeff Winger, played by Joel McHale, is loosely based on himself.

Harmon wrote or co wrote several of the episodes and was the showrunner, which meant he oversaw the day to day operations of the series and therefore would have even outranked the director. Nothing got past him without his final say which makes sense seeing as it’s his baby. He has an idea of the kind of programme he wants to make and naturally he knows the characters intimately as they came straight from his head onto the page and ultimately onto our TV screens. Therefore it would be an absolutely ludicrous manoeuvre to fire him from what is essentially his own show but that’s exactly what NBC or Sony Pictures Television or both of them did.

It’s actually kind of complicated as to exactly who is to blame for what has to be the worst decision since Decca listened to an audition tape of a young unknown band called The Beatles and said “they’re not going anywhere, let’s sign Brian Poole and the Tremloes instead.” Okay maybe that’s hyperbole but the fact of the matter is that the decision to oust Harmon has not only affected the quality of the show but has also angered Community’s loyal fan base. Not only that but the cast and writers of the show were deeply upset by the decision to get rid of Harmon (except maybe for Chevy Chase) and upon hearing the news, immediately voiced their support for him. Try to imagine South Park continuing without Trey Parker and Matt Stone or the Sopranos without David Chase.

The reasons for Harmon’s firing are blurry at best but NBC handled it in their typical, incompetent manner that they’ve become known for ever since the Conan O’Brien / Jay Leno debacle. The head of NBC, Bob Greenblatt was quoted as saying that Harmon would still be part of the show in some capacity for the fourth season which prompted this response from Harmon on his Tumblr blog.

“I think he meant to say he’s sure cookies are yummy, because he’s never called me once in the entire duration of his employment at NBC. He didn’t call me to say he was starting to work there, he didn’t call me to say I was no longer working there and he definitely didn’t call to ask if I was going to be involved. I’m not saying it’s wrong for him to have bigger fish to fry, I’m just saying, NBC is not a credible source of All News Dan Harmon.”

There is however light at the end of the tunnel for all us Community fans out there and despite what the ratings say, our numbers are many. Rumours have begun to circulate that Dan Harmon is set to return and with David Guarascio and Moses Port, Dan Harmon’s replacements, not signed on for the fifth season, it looks like he may go back to the top of the creative ladder which is exactly where he belongs.

There’s talk of the fifth season being the last but any self respecting Community fan wants six seasons and a movie so if NBC don’t pick it up again here’s hoping Netflix will do what they’ve done for Arrested Development and take it over. So it’s beginning to look everything might be okay and balance will be restored to the Community universe. The fourth season can be looked upon as just a blip, a bum note in an otherwise flawless musical performance, a Godfather 3 in an otherwise perfect Godfather saga.

Back in 1999, when the South Park movie was being made, Matt Stone got so sick of unwanted interference from Paramount that he wrote a memo which he then faxed to them. The memo was titled ‘A Formula For Success’ and it said “Cooperation + you doing nothing = success.” Let’s hope that memo somehow finds its way to the offices of NBC and Sony Pictures Television.

In a match between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders on Sunday evening, Gay Footballer Robbie Rogers made history.

In the 77th minute, the 26-year-old midfielder entered the game as a substitute for the Galaxy, becoming the first active openly gay male athlete to compete in a U.S. professional team sport.
